Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, and other social media tools, is changing its data privacy policy to allow users to use our data to train their artificial intelligence. This post teaches how to inform Meta that you want your Facebook & Instagram accounts data to remain private from AI, using the GDPR, which is unfortunately available only for European Union Citizens.
This post is an extension of this LinkedIn Post.
Even though it can sound like a funny paradox, we at Humaitrix care about your data privacy and inspire you to protect it.
If you prefer to go straight to the point and submit your objection to Meta's use of your data, click here and go straight to the point.
🌟 Few are aware of my deep-rooted commitment to Data Privacy. However, my past career experiences, particularly during the #GDPR era, bear testament to this. I was instrumental in the creation of one of the most influential Data Privacy tools in the market, #usercentrics.
My journey was fulfilling, and while I acknowledge that the consent banner could have been less intrusive and more transparent, I consider it a success. This experience propelled me towards my next venture, Artificial Intelligence, the next big thing.
From day one at Humaitrix, I added data privacy as one of our most essential values because I believe we must protect the data of our customers and users. Only a few weeks later, my table was full of people asking me about Meta's Data Privacy change, which will take place on June 26, 2024.
This is the meaningful part of this new privacy policy:
I don't know about you, but even as the creator of an Artificial Intelligence company, I care that our data is not being used, without our explicit consent, to train whatever tool we will invent in the future. If you are reading this and live in Europe, know that you have a way to prevent them from doing so.
How to Object to AI Being Trained Using Your Social Media Data
I found the following links to register your objection to the use of your data to train an AI:
You must inform your country, email address (make sure to use the same social media account) and the reason. The optional field is blank because GDPR is a reason strong enough, so this is what I told them:
Please tell us how this processing impacts you:
"GDPR: I do not approve of using my information for purposes other than my initial consent."
Here is a screenshot of the form:
Once you complete the form, you will receive an automated response saying they will honour your request. After a couple of minutes, I received the following email:
"Hi Daniel, We’ve reviewed your request and will honor your objection. This means your request will be applied going forward. If you want to learn more about generative AI, and our privacy work in this new space, please review the information we have in Privacy Center. facebook.com/privacy/genai This inbox cannot accept incoming messages. If you send us a reply, it won’t be received. Thanks, Privacy Operations"

Cheers & Love,
